The Story of IKON

IKON began as a dream to start a different kind of community that would unite people with Jesus to change the world they inhabit.
In 2007 Aaron and Tracy Monts felt called to start a new church. They travelled to San Francisco to explore the possibility of launching a new church in the city. After a great deal of prayer, several “God-moments” along the way and at the invitation of several churches, Aaron and Tracy felt like this was where God wanted them.
In late 2007 Aaron told his home church that God was calling them to San Francisco. They spent the next 14 months dreaming, praying, fundraising, and preparing to move to The City to start a different kind of community. A broad coalition of 22 churches from Boston, Chicago, Miami, New York City, Reno, Sacramento, San Diego, and other cities around the country formed to help get IKON off the ground. As a result, Aaron and Tracy were able to move to San Francisco in August of 2008.
In November of 2008 we launched our first small group and over the next several months multiplied to five different groups meeting in different neighborhoods around the city. That next spring we began to meet as a Launch Community in Mission Bay to prepare for our weekly gatherings.
We grew from a handful of people to about 45, and the word spread from there. We launched our weekly gatherings on October 11, 2009 in MEZZANINE, a local nightclub located in SOMA across from Blue Bottle Coffee in Mint Plaza.
Today IKON meets in the historic San Francisco Chronicle building located at 5th and Mission Street in SOMA with groups that meet all over the city throughout the week.
As amazing as the stories have been in the first few years, we believe we’re just getting started.
